Robert Gardner

Robert G. Gardner, age 83 of Brookfield, died Monday June 24, 2013 at Pershing Memorial Hospital in Brookfield. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am Thursday June 27, 2013 at Rhodes Funeral Home with Reverend Mike White officiating. Burial with Military Honors will be held at Rose Hill Cemetery, Brookfield. Masonic services will be held at 5:30 pm Wednesday June 26 at the funeral home with family receiving friends from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm. Memorials have been suggested to the Kidney Foundation, and or the Diabetes Association and may be left at or sent to the funeral home, 216 Linn Street, Brookfield, Missouri 64628. On line condolences may be sent to www.rhodesfh.com. Robert Gene, son of Byron and Cynthia Elizabeth Bowser Gardner was born on September 22, 1929 at Denison, Kansas. On June 8, 1979 he was married to Maxine Scott at Laclede. He was a member of the Masons, a lifetime member of VFW, member of Evangelical United Methodist Church, and a member of the Eagles Lodge for many years. He enjoyed crafts, woodworking and traveling. He joined the Marines in June 1948 and served on board the USS Valley Forge CV45 during the Korean War. He was discharged in June 1952. He then joined the U.S. Air force and was an air traffic controller at Offutt Air force Base. He was discharged in February 1959. Robert then went to work for C.B & Q Rail Road in February 1953. He was laid off in February 1955. Robert then went back into the U.S Air force for four years, and went back to work for the Rail Road in 1959. Robert retired from the Rail Road in August 1991. He is survived by his wife, Maxine, of the home; children, Heather Gardner, and friend Michael R. Tetzlaff, St. Louis, Mo., Lloyd Gardner and wife Darlene, Frankford, Mo., Gayla and husband Jim Sportsman, Brookfield, Robin and husband Bob Gray, Brookfield; step-son, Kenny Almond, Laclede; sisters, Louise and Phillip Jenkins, Topeka, Ks., John and Betty (Yochim) Miller, Kansas City, Mo., Dorothy Stroud, New Boston, Mo.; grandchildren, Nicole and Roxanne Sportsman, Brookfield, Mo., Cathleen and Josh Cline, Liberty, Mo., Sarah Gardner, Liberty, Mo.; step-grandchildren, Kelly and Sheri Almond, Dallas, Ga.; great-grandchildren, Kaiden Cline, Liberty, Mo., Avery James Sportsman, Brookfield, Mo., Paisley Smith, North Dakota; Step-great-grandchildren, Orlando Almond, Lothian, Maryland, Kenny and Kelly Almond, Dallas, Ga., Kaitlan Schultz, Omaha, Neb. and L/C Adam Schultz, U.S. Marine Corp. Robert is preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Richard Gardner; one sister, Norma Gardner; one brother-in-law, James Stroud.
